What Is This Meditation For?

A gentle guided meditation for children and young people

Through the imagery of angel wings, stars, planets and cosmic light, children are invited to take a calming journey away from everyday worries. The meditation encourages slow breathing, body awareness and positive visualisation while supporting children to recognise the qualities they already carry within themselves, such as courage, love, kindness and inner strength.

When a child’s mind is busy with thoughts, worries or everything happening around them, guided imagination can offer a gentle pause. Instead of trying to stop their thoughts, the meditation gives their attention somewhere peaceful and uplifting to rest. Imagining light, colour, stars and a journey through the universe may help children move beyond repetitive thinking and become more aware of their body, feelings and inner world. When children are introduced to this kind of practice from a young age, they can begin to discover that their thoughts are only one part of their experience—and that they can also find calm, creativity and a quieter, more spacious way of being within themselves.

This meditation may be helpful:

  • Before bedtime or rest time

  • At the beginning or end of the school day

  • During quiet time at home or in the classroom

  • After a busy, emotional or overwhelming experience

  • When children need support settling their bodies and minds

  • As a gentle introduction to mindfulness and relaxation

  • To encourage compassion towards themselves, others and the natural world

The meditation also offers children a positive way to explore kindness and connection. By imagining themselves sharing stardust with the Earth and with others, children can develop a sense of empathy, generosity and hope. The affirmations at the end reinforce the message that love, kindness and positive choices can make a meaningful difference.

Guidance for Parents and Teachers

This guided meditation can be shared with children at home, in schools, nurseries, wellbeing groups or other supportive settings. It is best offered as an invitation rather than an expectation. Children should always feel free to participate in their own way.

Creating a calm environment

Choose a quiet, comfortable space where children are unlikely to be interrupted. They may sit on a chair, lie down or choose another position that feels comfortable and safe. Soft lighting, blankets or gentle background music may help create a relaxing atmosphere, although these are not essential.

Allow enough time for children to settle before beginning. Speaking slowly, softly and with pauses can help them follow the journey and create their own images.

Encouraging imagination

Children may imagine the angel wings, stars and planets in different ways. There is no right or wrong picture to create. Some children may see vivid colours and detailed scenes, while others may experience the meditation through feelings, sounds or simple ideas.

You can reassure children that they can change the images, leave parts out or imagine something different if that feels more comfortable. They may also keep their eyes open or lower their gaze rather than closing their eyes.

Supporting emotional safety

Remind children that they are in charge of their own experience. If anything feels uncomfortable, they can stop, look around the room, move their body or return their attention to their breathing and the surface beneath them.

Avoid presenting the meditation as a way to make difficult feelings disappear. Instead, describe it as a gentle opportunity to pause, breathe and find a sense of comfort. Some children may experience emotions or memories during relaxation, so offer calm reassurance and allow them time to return to the present moment.

At the end, invite children to wiggle their fingers and toes, notice the room around them and open their eyes when they feel ready. A short conversation, drawing activity or quiet reflection may help them transition back into the day.

Using the meditation regularly

With regular practice, children may become more familiar with calming their bodies, focusing their attention and recognising their inner resources. It can be helpful to use the meditation at predictable times, such as before sleep, after lunch or during a classroom wellbeing session.

However, children respond differently to guided visualisation. Some may prefer movement, music, breathing exercises or sensory activities. Offer a range of calming choices and respect each child’s individual needs.

Helpful reflection questions - After the meditation, you might gently ask:

  • What did you notice during the journey?

  • What colour was your star or cosmic light?

  • Which gift did you choose—peace, hope, courage, kindness or love?

  • How did your body feel at the beginning and at the end?

  • What is one kind thing you could do for yourself or someone else today?

Children do not need to share if they would rather remain quiet. Listening, drawing or simply sitting peacefully can be meaningful ways to respond.

This meditation is intended as a supportive wellbeing practice and is not a substitute for professional help. If a child is experiencing ongoing anxiety, distress or emotional difficulties, consider seeking guidance from an appropriately qualified professional.

A Journey Through the Stars on Angel Wings

Find a comfortable place to sit or lie down.

Let your hands rest gently by your sides or in your lap.

If it feels comfortable, softly close your eyes—or simply lower your gaze.

Take a slow, deep breath in...

And gently breathe out.

Let’s take another slow breath together.

Breathe in calm...

And breathe out anything you no longer need.

Now imagine a beautiful pair of angel wings appearing beside you.

These wings are soft, strong and filled with shimmering light. They may be any colour you choose—golden like the sunshine, silver like the moon, or glowing with all the colours of the rainbow.

The wings gently open and invite you to climb aboard.

You are completely safe, surrounded by warmth, comfort and love.

Are you ready?

Let’s begin our journey...

The angel wings slowly lift you into the air.

Up you rise, as light as a feather, floating peacefully above the trees, the rooftops and the soft, white clouds.

You look down and see the Earth beneath you—beautiful, bright and full of life.

As the wings carry you higher, you enter the magnificent universe.

All around you, tiny stars twinkle and sparkle like diamonds.

Some shine brightly. Others glow softly in the distance.

Perhaps one special star catches your eye.

What colour is your star?

Can you imagine its light gently shining upon you?

Feel its peaceful glow warming your face and filling your heart.

The angel wings carry you onwards, past magnificent planets of every colour.

You may see a swirling blue planet, a golden planet surrounded by shining rings, or perhaps a magical planet painted with colours no one has ever seen before.

You travel through glorious, endless light...

Light upon light...

Each gentle ray carries a special gift—peace, hope, courage, kindness and love.

Choose the light you need today.

Imagine it flowing gently into the top of your head...

Down through your face and shoulders...

Into your arms, hands and fingertips...

Through your chest and into your heart...

All the way down to your legs, your feet and your toes.

Your whole body is now glowing with beautiful cosmic light.

You feel peaceful.

You feel strong.

You feel loved.

You remember that this light has always lived within you.

Now the angel wings turn gently towards the Earth.

Together, you begin your journey home.

As you float closer, you notice that your hands are filled with sparkling stardust—tiny specks of love and kindness gathered from your journey through the universe.

There is more than enough to share with everyone.

Stretch out your hands and sprinkle some of this beautiful light over the Earth.

Sprinkle it over the forests, flowers and rivers.

Sprinkle it over the oceans and all the creatures who live there.

Sprinkle it over every town, village and city.

Send some light to anyone who may be feeling lonely, worried or sad.

Send some to the people you love.

And send some to people you have never met.

Watch as each tiny sparkle carries a kind thought, a gentle smile or a little hope into the world.

Now save one special handful of stardust for yourself.

Place your hands gently over your heart and imagine the sparkling light settling inside.

Let it remind you:

I carry love within me.

I can choose kindness.

My light can make a difference.

The angel wings now carry you slowly back through the soft clouds.

Down you float, past the rooftops and trees, returning safely to where your journey began.

The wings gently place you down and wrap around you like a warm, comforting blanket.

Take a slow breath in...

And gently breathe out.

Notice the surface beneath your body.

Wiggle your fingers and your toes.

Notice the room around you.

When you feel ready, slowly open your eyes.

Your cosmic journey may be over for now, but its beautiful light remains within your heart.

Whenever you share a smile, offer a helping hand or speak kind words, you sprinkle a little more love and kindness into the world.

And whenever you wish to return, your angel wings will be waiting to carry you among the stars once again.
